Evaluation: Measurements of Differences between Semantic Spaces

    Get PDF
The existing method to measure differences among semantic spaces is costly. The current study evaluates a low-cost method. Specifically, the current study uses three measurements of induced semantic structures (ISS) to measure the differences between vector-based semantic spaces. An ISS of a target word is that word\u27s ordered nearest neighbors. Our hypothesis, which was confirmed, is that the three measurements have the ability to measure the differences between spaces. In addition, the number of nearest neighbors used by measurements has an effect on the ability. Evaluation was conducted on five Touchstone Applied Science Associates (TASA) spaces. The measured differences between spaces were compared to the objective similar pattern of TASA spaces, which follow a well-defined hierarchy. The comparison indicateds that three measurements can capture the objective TASA pattern and that performance measures were better than a measurement which does not use ISS. It was concluded that the new method of measuring space differences in an apt complement to the existing method

Age-adjusted nonparametric detection of differential DNA methylation with case–control designs

Background: DNA methylation profiles differ among disease types and, therefore, can be used in disease diagnosis. In addition, large-scale whole genome DNA methylation data offer tremendous potential in understanding the role of DNA methylation in normal development and function. However, due to the unique feature of the methylation data, powerful and robust statistical methods are very limited in this area. Results: In this paper, we proposed and examined a new statistical method to detect differentially methylated loci for case control designs that is fully nonparametric and does not depend on any assumption for the underlying distribution of the data. Moreover, the proposed method adjusts for the age effect that has been shown to be highly correlated with DNA methylation profiles. Using simulation studies and a real data application, we have demonstrated the advantages of our method over existing commonly used methods. Conclusions: Compared to existing methods, our method improved the detection power for differentially methylated loci for case control designs and controlled the type I error well. Its applications are not limited to methylation data; it can be extended to many other case–control studies

Properties of some statistics for AR-ARCH model with application to technical analysis

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this paper, we investigate some popular technical analysis indexes for AR-ARCH model as real stock market. Under the given conditions, we show that the corresponding statistics are asymptotically stationary and the law of large numbers hold for frequencies of the stock prices falling out normal scope of these technical analysis indexes under AR-ARCH, and give the rate of convergence in the case of nonstationary initial values, which give a mathematical rationale for these methods of technical analysis in supervising the security trends

Automatic Help System with Voice Input for Passengers of Drop Taxi

    Get PDF
With the changes of the times and the advancement of science, there are more and more cars around us. Cars bring great convenience to people\u27s lives, such as drop taxis can be on call, cheaper and convenient. However, in recent years, there have been many incidents of female passengers being killed by drop taxi drivers, which has resulted in many female compatriots not being safely out of the country. This motivated us to develop artificial intelligence systems using voice input to identify crime tendency of taxi drivers. The system we developed uses the keyword input technology of voice input. Specifically, we first build up the keyword library of criminal tendencies based on similar cases reported in news. Then we present the details of how our system recognizes the crime tendency of a driver through what he talked with a female passenger. Finally, we explain how the system automatically takes the corresponding warning or send out help signal to police officers after it identifies a driver has a criminal tendency

Linear mixed models for complex survey data: implementing and evaluating pairwise likelihood

As complex-survey data becomes more widely used in health and social-science research, there is increasing interest in fitting a wider range of regression models. We describe an implementation of two-level linear mixed models in R using the pairwise composite likelihood approach of Rao and co-workers. We discuss the computational efficiency of pairwise composite likelihood and compare the estimator to the existing stagewise pseudolikelihood estimator in simulations and in data from the PISA educational survey

Localized Histoplasma capsulatum osteomyelitis of the fibula in an immunocompetent teenage boy: a case report

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Infection of local bone with Histoplasma capsulatum is rare and difficult to diagnosis, and occurs particularly in immunocompetent subjects, who are more likely to be affected by a wide range of organisms. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy presented with localized histoplasmosis osteomyelitis in the left fibula without any evidence of abnormal immunological function or systemic disease. After surgical clearance of the lesion and homologous cancellous bone, the patient was treated orally with voriconazole for 6 months. The patient completely recovered with full function of his left leg during the 5-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Histoplasmosis osteomyelitis can occasionally occur in immunocompetent individuals and can be complete cured by surgical clearance of the lesion and antibiotic treatment
